ALVA LUNCHEON @ RAMSGATE RSL
Our first luncheon at Ramsgate RSL was a lovely day. Our lunch was enormous (the cake was VERY popular!) and our very special guest,
Calvin DeGrey, had us giggling and reminiscing about the good old days, and how scary it is when you son says "Dad, I want to be a comedian!"
Calvin was also promoting his book "Leave 'em laughing - a handy guide to public speaking"
There was a fabulous ALVA atmosphere in the air, and we look forward to visiting Ramsgate again soon.
Thanks must go to Rhonda Schou for her assistance in getting us the room for the day, and to "Nattertime" who provided the girls with some lovely Christmas gifts!
ALVA & The "MO" Awards
What a fabulous nite we had at the 2007 "MO" Awards held at Bankstown Sports Club. The room and the food were fantastic,
the show was huge and the awards were presented to many talented artists.
Among the winners were ALVA girls Karen Beckett, who won Best Female Vocalist and our very own Queen B who,
along with her boys, won Best Vocal Group, Helen Zerefos, who won Best Classical/Opera Performer,
and the very talented Melinda Schneider, who won Best Female Country Vocalist.
A great night was had by all
ALVA Girls Entertaining the troops

Hi Everyone,
I volunteered to entertain our Troops last year but didn’t hear anything, then a couple of months ago I got a call asking if I would be interested in going and singing for the Troops, I gladly said yes, and so this was my first trip. In late June this year I was part of a tour to the Solomon Islands with the Screaming Jets, a Pop singer Brielle and a lady comedian Bev Killick.
I went to Guadalcanal , the main island of the Solomons. We weren’t put up in fancy accommodation. We shared the same food and drink, and slept in the same type of accommodation as the Diggers and Federal Police who were on duty out there. We had Communal showers which at times we shared with a couple of glow in the dark Geckos. We were taken out in jeeps, trucks and helicopters. One trip we were dropped by helicopter into the jungle and taken to a village where the Army met us and we performed totally acoustically as there was no electricity. I also performed 2 major shows on the main base near Honiara , where the RAAF band did a fabulous job in playing for me. Their Bass player is a regular player with The Davidson Brothers. We also performed in the Rove jail to the guards. That was amazing and scary as some of the prisoners are very serious murderers. We made history as we were the very first Aussies to go into the jail and perform.
To top off the trip on the last day we entertained a village and some New Zealand Troops. After our acoustic concert the boys got up and went into their barracks. We weren’t sure what was going on then about 10 minutes later they came back, with shirts off and performed a traditional Haka to thank us. It was awesome!
It was an amazing experience. I am so grateful for the opportunity to entertain our fabulous Troops and Police force over in the Solomons. Time and time again an emotional Digger would tell me how much they appreciated us being there. Hours before we left the emotions were welling up and many tears were shed, we felt like we were leaving family members. We opened our hearts to sing to them and they opened their hearts and we became united. Tears are welling up now while I’m recalling the experience. I have never been so touched and affected by anything in my whole career.
Love,
Kel-Anne xx
ALVA Trivia Nite @ Campsie RSL
A more brain- busting nite of trivia was ever had anywhere in the known world. Our Quizmistress Lizzie Layton cracked the whip and our minds dug as deep as they could. Three blistering rounds later there were two winning teams - Bosom Buddies and The Kampuchean People's Republic of Judea (or something like that!!) Both these teams graciously donated ther cash prize back to ALVA so not only did we have fun,we raised some much needed funds.
Many thanks go to Lizzie Layton, Helen Bouquet (who very sheepishly celebrated her birthday as well) and the staff at Campsie RSL for another great night.
Mark Kristian roasted @ Petersham RSL
A chance to see Mark Kristian roasted....who'd miss that? Not this little black duck, or a room full of folks, both punters and pros at Petersham RSL on 1st July 2007.
Mark started the show off with a bang, giving us a taste of his talents, and some old footage of some boyband hairstyles I think he'd rather forget!!
Then the roasters took the stage. Some serenaded, some went for the jugular. Liz Layton tried to answer the age old question "Is Mark Kristian gay?", Paul Martell listed an enormous set of criteria that Mark must fulfil to do his job, the most important being "can he call bingo?"
Maria Venuti, Lola Nixon, Donna Boyd, Nathan Foley and Tracey Ellis paid tribute in song.
Darren Carr gave his impression of Mark "well, he's a p#%f - that's the impression I get!" and it was all stupendously held together by Stuart Wagstaff himself.
Most importantly though, Mark arranged the whole day as a benefit to ALVA - raising $5500. Another amazing contribution by our fabulous Associate member Mark Kristian.
